CNC Turning Lathe

What is CNC Turning?

CNC turning is a machining process that utilizes a lathe to rotate a workpiece at a fixed speed (RPM), while a cutting tool removes excess material from the piece until the desired shape and finish are achieved. Turning produces a cylindrical surface by using a fixed-point cutter. It can be done alone or in conjunction with other machining processes like milling to achieve more complex shapes.

In CNC turning, the actual machining process is handled automatically rather than by hand. An operator will program in the desired shape using computer software and the machines will then automatically do the machining.

CNC turning machines can come in different shapes, sizes and configurations, have one or multiple spindles, offer different tooling options, limitations, speeds and powers. A professional manufacturer should know the limits and capabilities of their machines, and the best option to choose for a given project.
